Bio Bay
Vieques’ bio(luminescent) bay is reportedly the healthiest (and therefore the most spectacular) in the world.
This is due in part to geography – the very narrow inlet to the bay and shallow depth throughout promote the high salinity the dinoflagellates (these are the micro-organisms that create the luminescence) need to prosper. In part to botany – the bay is edged in red mangroves releasing the vitamin B12 that the dinoflagellates crave. And in part to the relatively undeveloped lands surrounding the bay – meaning light (and other) pollution is minimal.
