Vieques is an island-municipality of Puerto Rico and a U.S. Commonwealth meaning that American citizens do not need a passport to travel here.

Vieques is an island of about 52 square miles lying east of Puerto Rico with the Atlantic Ocean on its north and the Caribbean Sea on its south side.
The entire eastern and western ends of Vieques are unpopulated and much of the land is a natural reserve largely covered by brush and subtropical dry forest, administered by the Federal Agency of Fish and Wildlife. There are two major towns: Isabel Segunda on the north coast, and Esperanza on the south.
Vieques has a central ridge running east-west surrounded by rolling hills. The highest point is Monte Pirata at 987 feet. There are no permanent rivers or streams. Along the coast lie many sandy beaches, lagoons and mangrove swamps.
Vieques has a warm, tropical to sub-tropical climate. Temperatures vary little throughout the year ranging from 82 °F (28 °C) in January to 87 °F (31 °C) in July. The months of September–November bring the most rain. Prevailing winds are easterly.
Vieques is at risk from hurricanes from June to November. In 1989 Hurricane Hugo caused considerable damage to the island.
Its many beaches, relaxed atmosphere and unspoilt beauty make it a tourists’ favorite. Sailors, divers, snorkelers, horseback riders and beach enthusiasts of all ages will have a wonderful time here!
